It is pretty much impossible to look up "Fordyce Arkansas News" and not see hundreds of articles and stories about what happened at "The Mad Butcher" this summer. A mass shooting killed four people and wounded 11 others, including two police officers, at a Fordyce grocery store on Friday, June 21. Arkansas State Police said the suspected shooter, 44-year-old Travis Posey of New Edinburg, was taken into custody and treated for non-life-threatening injuries after a shootout with law enforcement. The shooting happened at the Mad Butcher, Fordyce's only grocery store. Posey will be charged with four counts of capital murder and 10 counts of attempted capital murder. He is being held at the Ouachita County Detention Center and pleaded not guilty in his first court appearance. "It's tragic, and our hearts are broken," Arkansas State Police Col. Mike Hagar said. "Our prayers, along with Governor Sanders and the entire state of Arkansas, will be with this community and those affected victims.

Posey was armed with a 12-gauge shotgun and a pistol, using a bandolier that held dozens of extra shotgun rounds. Police believe a majority of the rounds fired were from the shotgun. Five women and three men, ranging from 20 to 65 years old, survived injuries sustained in the shooting, according to the Arkansas State Police. As of June 28, three people remain hospitalized but are expected to recover.

No one ever imagined something like this to happen in little old Fordyce. Fordyce is known as a sports-crazed town where everybody knows everybody. This event absolutely shocked the town and brought the community together even more than I thought possible. I have grown up in Fordyce all my life and felt so safe and protected there. The only news you would here about in town were about whatever sports game had played that Friday night and what was going on business wise in the town. When the mass shooting happened news stories spread like wildfire, I would drive through town and see 4 different channel cars parked on the side of the street. Even though this event was a tremendous tradgedy, our town has never been more supportive to each other. I was overwhelmed at the amount of support and love people gave each other.
